Beware of Gremlin

Within us is this little negative voice that creeps up when we are not expecting it. This voice is triggered through some action that is executed by us, through some internal processing, or through someone. In most cases that I have experienced, it is generally triggered through other individuals.

The biggest challenge we have is that we can’t get rid of is this negative voice. It belongs to us. It can’t hide. It can’t be destroyed. It is ever-present.

This voice will manipulate you in ways that you can’t imagine. It will force you to seek validation about actions you are about to take. It will seek validation about the way that you look. It will question your every motive. It will direct your anger towards others. It will seek revenge. It will question your essence of being.

The voice is endless chatter. This voice talks about negative events that occurred in your past and brings to light negative assumptions about your future. This voice will bring back memories of names you were called in the past, events that did you harm, or the uprooting of battle scars from past arguments. It will also place doubts and fears about potential dangers consuming your mind.

This voice, or the “Gremlin” as many have called it, is contained within the psyche of our mind. It is confined to us. It can’t leave – and can’t be eliminated.

Just like some homes have a “beware of dog” sign posted outside as a warning to visitors entering through the gate to be aware of their pet, we also need to be cognizant of the Gremlin that resides within our physical being.

The voice within you is like a pet in a home and has two sides – one positive to protect you from outsiders and support your decisions (your best friend), and the other negative to potentially wreak havoc against you if it is not treated well and not accepted by you (your enemy). This negative voice is the Gremlin.

We all have our own Gremlin residing within us. It is unique to each of us – but get this – the voice is only called a “Gremlin” when it directs anything negative toward us – else what remains in its pure form is the voice of your best friend. These negative voices could be anything that continuously question our actions, increases lack of accepting ourselves, increases our lack of worthiness – and worse – creates an environment of not loving ourselves.

Beware of the Gremlin that resides within.

There is only one action that can be taken to defeat the Gremlin – and that is to create an environment within yourself to fully accept yourself for what you are – a perfect human being. If you accept and own every action and decision you take, the Gremlin can’t question your action or motive. If you tell yourself you are worthy of being, the Gremlin can’t question your lack of worthiness. If you love yourself for who you are, the Gremlin can’t come close to even questioning whether you are loved.

It is often the case that the Gremlin rises within you when someone triggers something that breaks down your defense system. The Gremlin voice tells you to fight back in anger. The Gremlin voice tells you take revenge. The Gremlin tells you to think ill thoughts about the other party.  None of these actions is effective in defeating the Gremlin.

Taking opposite action to what the Gremlin says to you is the only way to win – don’t fight back – don’t take revenge – and don’t think ill thoughts about others.

As you start to create more positive moments of joy and acceptance within, the Gremlin voice will naturally be silenced by converting an enemy within into a friend. This is the voice you constantly want to hold near and dear to yourself.
